Stop and Think Before Downloading Anything Off the Internet

from:

There you are surfing through the Internet, and you come across a cool sight, and think you just have to download that! Wow, that background would look so cool, or maybe that music you love so much you just have to download. If you are reading this article, you may have already realized that many items you download have some hidden surprises that are not always nice ones.

When you download anything from the Internet, you are opening yourself up to a possible attack from a virus or a hacker. You are also inadvertently allowing spyware onto your computer so that your every move through the World Wide Web is being tracked and watched. If you are not careful, the very programs you choose to download to protect against spyware will actually put more onto your computer.

How many times have you gone to purchase something, or upgrade a program you have, just about anything and you find the little box in the middle of your download that tells you before you go any further you have to check here to agree? On occasion, you may have considered reading what it is you are agreeing to only to realize a paragraph or two into it you find it dry, dull, and boring. You may have even decided to print it out so you can read it later (that will never happen by the way) and then decide to simply click the, “I agree” button. Do you really know what you agreed to? Well, you did not agree to use the product, though that is probably what you think. What you agreed to was to let a third party have access to a great deal of information about you and your spending and browsing habits.

Now you are feeling shocked! The downside to this is, at this time, if you do not click the “I agree” button, then you cannot download the information you want. So you are almost forced to give up a part of your privacy in order to have something you desire. Does that sound fair to you? Several activists and legislators are trying to change this very thing. Although several states have enacted some form of regulations by no means has it put an end to the malicious attempts of manufactures to add spyware without your knowledge? So what can you do in the meantime?

When you are surfing the Internet, be very careful what you choose to download. Is it that necessary? Could you purchase it from the store? If you really want it and choose to download read the pop-up screens and before clicking the “I agree” button take the five or ten minutes to read exactly what you are agreeing to. You may find you really do not want that item after all or you may continue but at least if you do, you download it knowing exactly what you are getting into.

Now, what will happen if you download something to protect your computer? It is not that easy. You will have to do some research, talk to friends, even go to computer stores, and talk to the personnel to get an idea of what is best for you. Be very careful about programs that offer you a free trial. The majority of the time the free trial does not give you all the features that you fell in love with when you read their advertisement. Most of the times you will get just enough of the features to tell you what you need to do to fix the problems you are having and now you have to but the entire software to accomplish that. Do not fall for that. Simply remove it off your system and keep looking for a program that works for you.

If you have downloaded something that you now cannot get off and it is messing with the way your computer operates you have a couple of options:

Throw it out the window

Try to download another program to get rid of the program you downloaded that does not work, or

Call a computer technician, take your machine to them, and be willing to cry as you write them a check to get your computer operating again.
